THE PROBLEM
The issue of juvenile detention reentry has taken on a new urgency in the United States in recent years. Tens of thousands of youth offenders in crisis have returned to their cities and neighborhoods in search of transitional housing and support seeking a fresh start. Indeed, for too long these youthful offenders were largely ignored and neglected by Federal, State, and Local governments.
MISSION Mitchell's House will tackle this difficult and timely issue by creating a positive and friendly environment to assist previously incarcerated at risk youth to make a successful reentry into society. It is our mission to support this transition by providing these juvenile offenders with meaningful employment, training services, continuing education, personal counseling, and a supportive environment.
PHILOSOPHY We all have a stake in seeing that these juvenile offenders returning to society make a successful return to their families, neighborhoods, and cities. We are prepared to tackle this difficult and timely issue by offering the above listed priorities of employment and training, etc., while simultaneously balancing the safety of the community with the needs of these juveniles. To this end, we must especially keep in mind the critical importance of continuing education for these youthful offenders and remember that without adequate help more than 50% of the juvenile offenders in this country will be re-incarcerated. If nothing is done, we will all ultimately bear the cost of their crimes, both in financial and human terms. |
